Storybook style may have its roots in Los Angeles, but it wouldnít be long before the style marched up the California coast to the arty and sleepy village of Carmel. Builder Hugh Comstock arrived in 1924 and met and married Mayotta Browne, a maker of rag dolls known as Otsy-Totsys. Comstock built a whimsical cottage he dubbed Gretel to house Mayottaís doll collection. The next year, Comstock built a companion for GretelóHansel, pictured here.
