Hand painted tile, clay pavers, and a cast-stone column are combined with a mottled stucco finish to yield another of Mizner’s brilliantly sculptural staircases. This example negotiates a U-turn and then recrosses itself on the archway carried by the column. The flamboyant Mizner claimed to have a “photographic eye” which allowed him to precisely recall the architectural forms he had seen on his far-flung travels--one explanation, however improbable, for the remarkable charm and authenticity of his designs.
