Another Jones trademark is the glass-filled gable truss seen in many of his living rooms, a startlingly contemporary feature that predates Modernist versions by a generation. The knee braces at left foreground recall wooden shipbuilding practice. Jones’s unreinforced brick construction, while unusually substantial, would never meet modern building codes--a fact that could dampen any enthusiasm toward modern-day versions of his homes. To the owner’s great credit, the Hermans residence has been seismically retrofitted with consummate sensitivity to its unique design.
