Hollywoodland, California. 1930's. Hollywoodland was a development in the hills northwest of Los Angeles, begun in 1923 by local builders. Soon its steep, winding, streets were filled with miniature French Normandy castles, English cottages, Spanish haciendas, and other whimsical, Storybook style homes. Actors from Humphrey Bogart to Gloria Swanson bought picturesque cottages here. All the elements of Storybook charm are seen: stuccoed and half- timbered walls combined with rubble stone accents, a prominent, rubble stone and brick chimney, a seawave pattern roof made to imitate thatching with jerkinhead gables, and diamond paned, mullioned windows with shutters.
